Gaza letter 1
Dear [your local] MP
I am shocked and revolted by our government’s response to the bombardment of civilians in the Gaza strip, a shocking 9000 lives lost, so many of them are children, yet there is little outcry from this government, only a rather bland statement that "Israel has the right to defend itself". In other words, Israel has the right to bomb innocent children, men and women, that had no part in the atrocities of Hamas on the 7th of October. "Two wrongs never make a right," and in this case we have a massacre of 1,400 people and another massacre of 9,000 and counting. There was huge condemnation after the attack on the Israeli citizens and rightly so, but there has been utter indifference to the ongoing massacre of Palestinians from our government, other than a few meaningless and lame statements of concern. Why is that?
Do their lives matter a fraction of an Israeli life? It seems so?
These people have names, jobs, dreams, achievements, people that love them, why is there not an outcry about their murder? Our government cannot even manage to call for a cease fire let alone condemning the murder of innocent people, in what other circumstances would we tolerate such a slaughter, on such a scale?
There is a pretence that mass deaths can be avoided because it is bombing Hamas homes. Let me describe to you how populated Gaza is, there are over 6,000 people per square kilometre, do you know how many bombs the Israeli army have dropped on Gaza? Over 20,000. Is that somehow “better” than the slaughter of the Israeli civilians” The number of deaths speak for themselves.
I call this state terrorism, as a country we condemn this in countries like Russia, Myanmar, China, why not Israel?
I don't quite get the value of a pause, if you are going to bomb their lives, homes and communities to pieces a week later in any case, we need to call for a cease fire repeatedly and condemn Israel’s actions. I have never felt such shame towards my government than I do today.
As you will know this conflict began many decades before 7th October in 1948. In its simplest form it is a case of land grabbing by the Israeli government. In 1948, Palestinians occupied around 85% of the land, now that is 15%, they have been forcibly removed and murdered. For every Israel killed since 2008 up to September this year, there have been 21 Palestinians killed. Who is the terrorist here?
Bombing people is wrong, evil and barbaric, that is not hard to understand, yet our government, seem to be defending such actions.
Mr Sunak standing shoulder to shoulder with Netanyahu, a prime minister who is responsible for war crimes; has sought to divide his own people; undermine the democracy of his own country and appears willing to sacrifice the lives of Israeli hostages taken by Hamas. I believe for him, this is simply an opportunity to drive Palestinian from their land en masse. This man does not seem to care about human life at all.
I urge you to call for a cease fire urgently, repeatedly and publicly in the strongest terms.
Yours sincerely

Dear [your local] MP
I am writing to express how appalled and horrified I am at the severe escalation of violence in Israel and Palestine since October 7th and to request that you raise the issue with the Foreign Secretary.
International law makes it clear that the deliberate killing of civilians, hostage-taking and collective punishment are war crimes and also enshrines the right of a people to resist oppression and military occupation. Any claims of respect for international law and human rights only carry weight if they are applied without discrimination.
The current war can only be understood in the context of Israel’s decades-long occupation, colonisation and oppression of Palestine, a system that meets the legal definition of apartheid, a crime against humanity.
There must be an immediate end to all violence in this conflict, especially violence against civilians of both sides. To this end I would ask you to request that the Foreign Secretary calls urgently for the following measures
1) an immediate ceasefire;
2) humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza immediately;
3) UN protection for Palestinians in Gaza.
Yours sincerely

Dear [your local] MP
I am sure you are as devastated as I am to see the escalation of violence in Israel and Palestine.
The Hamas attacks on Israeli civilians were appalling and unjustifiable. The announcement that Israel would implement a ‘complete siege’ on Gaza, in addition to the ongoing blockade, means that innocent civilians will not have access to food, water, or electricity. According to UN experts, "This amounts to collective punishment. There is no justification for violence that indiscriminately targets innocent civilians, whether by Hamas or Israeli forces. This is absolutely prohibited under international law and amounts to a war crime."
The Israeli military’s demand for over 1 million civilians in northern Gaza relocate to the south within 24 hours, ‘absent of any guarantees of safety or return, would amount to the war crime of forcible transfer’ according to the Norwegian Refugee Council.
As your constituent, I am writing to ask that you call publicly for:
- An immediate ceasefire and a release of all hostages
- An an independent ICC investigation into all war crimes
Please also write urgently to Foreign Secretary James Cleverly to call on his Israeli counterpart to:
- Ensure humanitarian access and protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure as mandated under international law.
- Protect all civilians in Gaza from imminent forcible transfer.
- Ensure the UK maintain support and aid to vulnerable Palestinians.
The UK government, as a friend to Israel, has an opportunity and a responsibility to hold Israel accountable to its obligations under international law. As hostilities continue, innocent civilians will pay the highest price unless the international community acts.
I look forward to hearing what the Foreign Secretary says in his reply.
Thank you,
